Ian Thomson-Smith - John the Butcher

Ian is proud of his long association with York Opera which dates back to 1986. His first principal role with the company was as John the Butcher in Hugh The Drover in 1995! His roles since then have included Papageno (The Magic Flute), the Pirate King (Pirates of Penzance), Captain Balstrode (Peter Grimes), Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas), Ping (Turandot), Escamillo (Carmen), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus) and Silvio (I Pagliacci). Ian now lives in Harrogate, where he has taken principal roles in the last five productions for Harrogate Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Other recent performances include Mendelssohn's 'Elijah', Brahms' Requiem and William Lloyd Webber's 'The Divine Compassion'.
