Hugh the Drover Cast biographies

Pauline Chadwick - Aunt Jane

Pauline Chadwick is a founder member of City Opera Group (now York Opera) who appeared in Operettas are Fun in 1966, and as Eurydice in Orpheus in the Underworld, the company’s first staged production in 1967. She began her working life as a teacher of languages and was Head of German at Tadcaster Grammar School for 10 years. As she took on more professional singing engagements, mainly on the concert platform, she changed to teaching Voice Production at the University of Hull, where she taught for 20 years. More recently she has taught, in one capacity or another, at Bootham School in York.

Of the 99 past productions of York Opera she has sung in 56, her favourite roles including Lady Macbeth, Turandot, Hansel, Lady Billows, Ellen Orford and Mary (in the 1981 production of Hugh the Drover). More recently she has directed Suor Angelica and 9 Gilbert and Sullivan operas, for which she has an enduring fondness! Pauline is delighted to come out of ‘singing retirement’ to take part once more in this lovely English opera.
