Join York Opera

New singing members are warmly welcomed but there are also occasionally non-singing roles for budding actors, dancers, musicians, "statues"- even Morris Men!

There is a wide range of other activities to get involved with....

  • Sets & scenery, costumes and props are designed then made or sourced by the company. There is a large set construction /scenery painting facility.
  • We have an active Social Committee which arrange a variety of events to suit our diverse membership including barn dances, theatre trips, meals out and sponsored walks to name but a few.
  • A Publicity and Sponsorship committee work together with the General Committee, with varied skills to support the staging of full-scale operas (and occasionally rarely performed works) with full orchestra.

Interested in joining in? Then see our contact details or speak to a member for a personal view of what it's like to sing with us. Reduced membership rates are offered for non-singing members and the unwaged.

Performing with York Opera

We generally stage two larger productions per year, one in early summer and one in the autumn.

The whole company joins together for a Christmas Concert and other occasional performances with the full company or groups of soloists.

We rehearse for most of the year, the main rehearsal night being Thursday until production is well under way, when we use Tuesdays as well. In the run up to opening night there is a full rehearsal schedule.

Auditions for solo roles are open to all. Auditions for chorus members are held periodically, but new members are always welcome to come and sing. Chorus singers are expected to have a vocal range adequate for their chosen part - 1st or 2nd Soprano, Alto, 1st or 2nd Tenor, Baritone or Bass, and to be a competent sight reader or a quick learner.

To find out what we're doing currently, please contact our Secretary, Chloe Crowder, by phone on 01765 606384 or by email at secretary@yorkopera.org

Our rehearsal venue is Lidgett Grove Methodist Church. To see where the church is please click here.

The Production Team

To be artistically successful, we need to be visually dramatic as well as musically excellent! We must also attract and entertain full houses and make our productions pay. This is the job of the Production Team (see About York Opera).

They welcome involvement of anyone with practical skills, particularly those with a specific talent. The various departments of the Production Team are:

  • Set Design and Construction/Painting
  • Costume Design and Making
  • Props - sourced or made
  • Publicity (including poster and programme design)
  • Stage Management (including Lighting and Sound depending on venue) and Front of House - in conjunction with the venue, and its staff.

If you are interested in joining the team, please contact Paul Richardson, on 01904 637069 or by email at productionteam@yorkopera.org.
